MICHAEL POWELL RARITIES: EDGE OF THE WORLD ORIGINAL VERSION PLUS PERSONAL SHORTS
When: 8 July 18:30-21:00, Venue: Birkbeck Cinema 43 Gordon Square
The discovery of an original nitrate print of what Michael Powell always considered his breakthrough as an independent filmmaker in 1937 reveals footage not included in the NFA’s 1990 restoration. Christopher Bird has been collaborating with Bob Geoghegan of Archive Film Agency to discover more about how Powell continued to polish his beloved film, ‘improving’ it for subsequent reissues, even reshooting and re-recording the soundtrack while making major Archers’ productions. This process would resume with his Return to the Edge of the World, financed by the BBC in 1978. As well as screening the 1937 original, tonight’s programme will reveal what kinds of changes Powell made, and will also include several of his most personal and rarely shown short films.
