Voices from the Chorus is a new essay film, incorporating a 1982 interview with Leonid Trauberg, founder of the Factory of the Eccentric Actor with Grigori Kozintsev in Petrograd in 1921, soon after the BFI’s acclaimed presentation of New Babylon with its original Shostakovich score. It was inspired by Trauberg’s final autobiographical text ‘A Voice from the Chorus’ (1989), in which he reflects on his career as part of the ‘chorus’ of Soviet pioneers and on his relationship with its ‘lead singer’ Sergei Eisenstein. It also deals with his public denunciation in 1949 as ringleader of the ‘Cosmopolitans’, accused of ‘bringing nothing but harm to Soviet cinema’, as well as his lifelong enthusiasm for slapstick silent comedy, for the novels of P. G. Wodehouse and G. K. Chesterton, and his lament for the FEKS’ lost film The Adventures of Oktyabrina.
This will be a preview of the film as work in progress. The programme will also include a previously unseen final interview with a much-admired filmmaker.
