The event began with a warm welcome from Andrew Jones, Director of Linking London, highlighting the aims of the event; to help advisors support students considering Nursing and Midwifery, by improving understanding of the courses, application process, and student experience.

Attendees heard from Dr Caroline Sargisson, Head of Recruitment, Nursing, at Middlesex University London and from Angela Frankland, Senior Lecturer in Midwifery Kingston University London who both provided detailed overviews of Nursing and Midwifery at their respective universities, highlighting course structures, placement models, entry requirements, and practical considerations to help students make informed choices.

This was followed by a panel Q+A, delegates had the opportunity to any questions they had. Topics included:

  • Personal statement advice – Emphasis on clarity, relevance and reflection.
  • Work experience – All work experience is valid and valuable, doesn't have to be healthcare specific.
  • Nursing vs Midwifery, for students unsure which route to go - Midwifery is more about supporting women and families, not just babies. If someone wants to work with children, children’s nursing is more appropriate.
  • GCSE requirements – doesn't need to be completed at the time of application but must be passed before enrolment.
  • Vaccinations & DBS checks - Vaccines are not mandatory but strongly recommended. Lack of vaccination may limit placement options and progression. DBS applications are managed post-offer.
  • Uniform policy - Uniform and practice policies are dictated by NHS trusts, not universities.
  • Application numbers - Notable drop in mature student applications
  • Apprenticeships and Foundation Years - Midwifery apprenticeships at Kingston begin September 2025. Kingston also offers a foundation year leading into midwifery.
  • Application red flags – eg. no qualifications listed, vague or generic statements, referencing the wrong university
  • Importance of research – attend open days and campus tours, understand the demands of the course and profession before applying.

The event concluded thanking all participants for their valuable contributions throughout the morning.
