While the government’s Growth Mission aims to address low economic growth and productivity by increasing participation in skilled employment, the number of adults engaged in education across all levels has more than halved since 2012—and continues to fall. As AI and automation reshape the workforce and skills shortages persist in professional and technical roles, the economy urgently requires a significant increase in adult learners pursuing upskilling and higher-level education.

This event then will provide an opportunity to find out more about the current adult education picture and the important role universities can play in encouraging adults to re-engage in learning, including higher level learning opportunities. Speakers include Caroline McDonald, Chief Executive at HOLEX, the lead body for Adult Community Education and Arinola Edeh CBE, Principal and Head of Service at Westminster Adult Education Service. We will then be hearing from a range of universities engaged in working with adults and their influencers in a range of settings, including with community and voluntary organisations, as well as in further education.

Attendees will hear from Birkbeck, University of London on their work with adults and their influencers in community settings, from the University of East London on their innovative New Beginnings Programme, a unique course that offers access to HE study for adults without formal qualifications, and from the University of Leeds, on their work with community, voluntary and further education colleges, including work with adults studying GCSE’s.

There will then be an opportunity for colleagues to explore some of the challenges faced, as well as opportunities to develop work in this area, both individually and in collaboration.
